Richard Burgoyne - Class of 1947

J. Richard Burgoyne passed away on November 2, 1991. He was born on June 4, 1929. He graduated from Montpelier High School in 1947. He was Student Body President his Senior year. He also participated in Band and Choir in high school. He graduated from Utah State Agricultural College in 1951 in business administration. He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity, and a member of ROTC. Following graduation Richard served in the United States Air Force stationed at Hill Field and in Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1953 with a 1st Lt. commission. Following his discharge he returned to Montpelier to live. He married Sherrel Rae Evans, January 31, 1955 in the Logan L.D.S. Temple. He purchased an interest in Burgoyne Store and operated it until it closed in 1979. He also worked at Burgoyne Amoco Service Station, U.S. Postal Service and Mark IV. Richard was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as a counselor in two bishoprics, ward financial clerk, stake and ward Sunday school superintendent, ward activity committee, gospel doctrine teacher, and twice on the stake High Council. He always regretted not having been able to serve a mission, but his last calling in the church was as a Stake Missionary, and he had just participated in his first baptism and conversion of a member the evening of his death. He was active in the community, member of the Lions Club, Rotary Club (twice president of the Rotary Club,) Chamber of Commerce, Red Cross, Scouting, City Beautification Committee. He was awarded Certificate of Merit by the Boy Scouts of America, and the "Big Bear Award" by the Chamber of Commerce. He continued his interest in music, singing in the "Men of the Valley" choral group, and many quartets and musical productions in church and community, and playing "taps" often at veteran's last rites for the American Legion. He loved skiing all of his life and taught many people to ski. He loved gardening. He loved people. He loved his family.

He was survived by his wife and children, Lisa and Mike Neeley, Rich and Tanya Burgoyne, Chris and Marilyn Burgoyne, Vince Burgoyne, Andrea and James Nye. His posterity (2014) numbers 24 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren
