Darwin Thompson - Class of 1949

Darwin was born 12 March 1931 in Georgetown, ID to Abraham Martin and Mabel Elizabeth Larsen Thompson.  He attended school in Georgetown until his senior year.  He then graduated from Montpelier High school.  He attended ISU and BYU, where he received a BS degree in Soil Science.

Darwin married Lorene Stewart on 4 Jun 1954 in the Manti, Utah LDS Temple.  She preceded him in death.  He then married Sharon Hoopes on 26 Dec 1970 in the Idaho Falls Temple.  He was a member of the Riverton, UT LDS Ward serving in the scouting program, as ward clerk for 14 years, 1st counselor in the High Priest Quorum, home teacher and a teacher at the time of his death.  He also served as a temple ordinance worker since 1995. 

Darwin was a retired health physics technician at the INEL.  He also worked as a soil scientist in Washington and Idaho, mapping soils, as well as field man for Utah-Idaho Sugar Co.

He is survived by his wife Sharon, two sons, David Allen and Warner Hoopes.  A foster son Terry Lee Lorentzen, eight daughters, Mayda Jean, Mary Ann, Karen, Kim, Cynthia, Michelle, Stephanie and Jennifer.  He has 19 grandchildren and one great grandchild.  He had 3 infant grandchildren pass away.

He died at his home in Riverton on 7 June 1998 from cancer and is buried in the Georgetown Cemetery.
