Lucille Peterson (Benjamin) - Class of 1935

Lucille Benjamin, 95 years of age, a longtime resident of Salmon, passed away on September 5 at the Discovery Care Center in Salmon. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on September 13 at the Salmon Cemetery with Rev. Stillman Bond officiating.

Lucille Peterson was born on March 3, 1917 in Montpelier to Ira and Julia Peterson. She graduated from Montpelier High School in 1935, and attended beauty school in Utah. Upon finishing her schooling she journeyed to Salmon in January of 1936 where she was employed by Lila Lee at Lila Lee’s Beauty Shop.

On May 12, 1937 she married Lev Benson and moved to Leadore to live on the Old Benson Ranch. On August 24, 1938, their only child, Sandra Norine was born. They moved back to Salmon in 1940 and Lucille once again worked for Lila Lee.

In 1950 the family moved to Cobalt where Lev was employed by Calera Mining Company. The mine shut down and they moved their house to Salmon. Lev passed away on May 30, 1966.

She married Ed Benjamin on June 21, 1967. She helped Ed with the bookkeeping at the Discount Tire shop. She also worked at Colvin’s Jewelry and King’s Department Store.

Lucille was creative with an eye for design and an accomplished seamstress. She loved to play cards, was a good story teller and was an active member in the Rebekah Lodge.

She was preceded in death by her husbands: Lev Benson and Edward Benjamin; daughter Sandra Norine Thornock and son-in-law Clair G. Thornock; parents: Ira Peterson and Julia Dunn Peterson; sisters: Ruth Peterson Wallentine and Iris Peterson Clayton; brothers: James Edmund Peterson, Russell E. Peterson, Vernal Eugene Peterson, Faye L. Peterson and Earl Peterson.

She is survived by her granddaughters: DeAnna Thornock of Glen Burnie, Maryland and Norine Thornock of Modesto, California.
