Selma Schick (Radke) - Class of 1937

The Idaho Statesman, 08/14/08

Selma Radke, 89, of Emmett, Idaho passed away on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008 at a local assisted living center. Selma Mildred Schick Radke was born on June 7, 1919 in Montpelier, Idaho to Fredrick Charles and Frederika Wilhelmine Schif Schick. Selma was raised in Montpelier by parents who had emigrated from Germany. She enjoyed many adventures with her large family-three brothers and seven sisters-and remained in close contact with them throughout her life. She graduated from Montpelier High School in 1937. She caught the eye of Walt Radke, and after three years of dating, they were married on Nov. 16, 1941 in Soda Springs, Idaho. In 2000 they were sealed in the Boise Idaho LDS Temple. The early years of their marriage were busy: Walt served in the Army Air Corps and was stationed around the country. Each time he moved, Selma soon followed. When Walt was sent overseas for World War II, Selma joined his family in Emmett, Idaho, living with his parents. Selma and Walt moved into their own home in Emmett shortly after Walt's release from service at the end of the war. Her life revolved around her family. Selma made a wonderful home for her husband and two children. Her door was always open for family and friends. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a highlight of her life. As a young woman, Selma worked at J.C. Penny's. In later life, she provided invaluable office support for Walt's business. At home, she took advantage of Emmett's plentiful crops and was soon an expert in canning. Her sweet pickles will be greatly missed! An active member of her community, Selma was involved with the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society. In 1974, she was named Woman of the Year for Gem County. Selma was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many capacities, but especially loved those that involved music and children. She will be remembered for her faith, her work ethic, her ready laughter and twinkling blue eyes, and her life-long love and support of her family. She took great pride in their achievements. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, parents, and eight siblings. She leaves her daughter, Wendy Jones of Bellevue, Wash. and her son, Steve Radke and wife, LaRena, of Emmett. In addition, she leaves seven grandchildren, Angie Wanlass, Jennifer Webb, Amber Simonich, Julie Carver, Andy Radke, Steven Jones, and Summer Radke; and six great grandchildren. She is survived by one sister, Virginia Platt. Selma's family expresses their gratitude to those who have lovingly assisted her at both Emmett Rehabilitation and Healthcare and The Cottages of Emmett. They are also grateful to Family Home Health and Hospice of Meridian, Idaho, which provided timely and caring support during the last months of her life. The strength of her spirit was always evident, despite the challenges of her lengthy illness. Until we meet again, farewell to our beloved Selma. Funeral services will be held in the Downtown LDS Chapel at 1001 East Second Street, Emmett on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at the Emmett Cemetery. Arrangements are by Potter Funeral Chapel of Emmett.
