Charles Stephens - Class of 1938

Charles Culver Stephens (Steve) 1920 ~ 2009 Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away January 2, 2009 at his home in Washington, UT of natural causes.Charles was born July 20, 1920 in Montpelier, Idaho to John Edwin and Louisa Perkins Stephens. He was the fifth of nine children. He graduated from Montpelier High School and attended Utah State University until he chose to serve his country as a Glider Pilot. Charles graduated in the first class of American Glider Pilots. During one of his numerous campaigns in World War II, his glider was shot down; he was wounded and taken prisoner of war. He received three Army Air Medals, two Purple Hearts, and the Presidential Unit Citation for his service, valor and courage. Prior to his deployment to the European Theater, he married his sweetheart VeNona Thompson on July 10, 1943 in Louisville, Kentucky. The marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple and VeNona and Charles have been together for the past 65 years. Charles worked in the mining industry for 29 years. He had a love of the outdoors and his hobbies include hunting, fishing, gunsmithing, auto mechanics and wood working. He is survived by wife, VeNona, his children, Glenn, Vicki Lin, Craig, and Lesa, 16 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, who will all greatly miss him. Interment will be at Georgetown Idaho Cemetery.
