Dean Dimick - Class of 1943

Dr. Dean Florimond Dimick, 74, chief of medicine at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township (1973-1988), died Wednesday, September 22, 1999 in the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, PA.

Born in Montpelier, Idaho, he was a son of Anita (Gay) Dimick of Montpelier and the late Donald A. Dimick.

He was the husband of Elsa (Schimberg) Dimick. They were married for 43 years last February.

Dr. Dimick was chief of medicine at the former Allentown Hospital (1967-1988). A specialist in endocrinology, he had a private practice in Allentown for the past nine years and was a lecturer in medicine at the University of Pennsylvania since 1975. He was also co-owner of the Long Swamp Bed & Breakfast.

He was professor of clinical medicine at Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine since 1996, and Hahnemann University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, 1986-96, and a member of the department of biology visiting committee at Lehigh University, 1988-92.

At Lehigh Valley Hospital, Dr. Dimick was chairman of continuing medical education, 1990-96, medical director of the Medical Regional Resource Center 1987-90, and vice president of academic affairs, 1988-90.

From 1959-67, he held several positions in Illinois.

A 1949 graduate of the University of Idaho, he received his medical degree from the University of Chicago School of Medicine in 1953. He completed a rotating internship at King County Hospital, Seattle, Wash., 1953-54; residency in internal medicine at the University of Chicago clinics, 1954-57, and a U.S. National Institute of Health Fellowship in endocrinology and steroid biochemistry at the Faculte de Medicine, Paris, France, 1957-59.

He was a fellow of the American College of Physicians Endocrine Society and a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the sub-specialty Board of Endocrinoligy and Metabolism. He was a Mormon. He was an Army veteran of World War II and recipient of the Purple Heart.

Dr. Dimick was president of the Advisory Council of the Arts at Lehigh Valley Hospital; a member of the Longswamp Township Planning Commission, and a director of the Lehigh Valley Community Council and Lehigh Valley Drug and Alcohol Service Inc. He was a member of the advisory boards of the Lehigh County Drug and Alcohol Agency; Confront, Allentown, and the Mid-Eastern Regional Medical Library of the College of Physicians, Philadelphia. He was a member of the American Federation of Clinical Research, American Medical Association and Lehigh County and Pennsylvania medical societies.

Survivors are his wife and mother; sons, Joshua F. of Utica, NY, Dr. Anthony L. of Bethlehem, PA, Timothy F. of Sebastopol, CA and Brigham JA of Philadelphia, PA; daughter, Rachel A., wife of Patrick J. Allen of Allentown, PA; brother, Donald B. of Coeur D'Alene, ID; sisters, Renee, wife of Clifford Holmes and Yvonne both of Utah and six grandchildren. He was preceded by an infant daughter, Samantha.

Services were held in Allentown, PA.
