Lew Dean Black - Class of 1964

Lew Dean Black

Lew Dean Black, 24, of Montpelier was killed at 10:30 pm July 15, 1971 in a traffic accident on US Highway 89 just east of the city. He was a passenger in an open four-wheel vehicle driven by Gary Christensen, 26, of Ovid. Mr. Christensen lost control of the vehicle and it turned over. Christensen was thrown free but Black was caught under the vehicle killing him instantly. The son of Berdean K. and Mary Lou Esterholdt Black, he was born September 12, 1946 at Montpelier. He attended elementary school at Pegram and graduated from Montpelier High School with the class of 1964. At the time of his death he was employed as a scraper operator for the Dravo Mining Company at the Monsanto plant north of Soda Springs. Mr. Black was a member of the LDS Church and served as a ward teacher in the Pegram Branch. Mr. Black and Gay Lynn Smith were married August 2,1965 In the Logan LDS Temple. Besides his widow he is survived by three daughters, Tiffany Lynn 4, Becky Ann 3 and Lu Dene Gay. Lu Dene Gay was born seven months after Lew Dean's passing.  Matthews Mortuary was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
