Gladys Stephens (Shaffer) - Class of 1956

Gladys Stephens Hayes Shaffer was born on May 6, 1938 to Owen Welker Stephens and Winnie Hymas Stephens, in Montpelier, Idaho. She was the youngest of four daughters; Maxine Smedley Chapman (Jess), Maurine Austin (Dale) and Kathryn Muir (Elmo).

She married E. Allen Hayes on June 18, 1956 and later divorced. Together they had three children; Trecia Lynne Sparks (Steven), Gregory Allen Hayes and Jeffrey Edward Hayes (Barbara).

Gladys married Terry Shaffer on August 5, 1978. Terry later died on July 26, 1990 in Seattle, Washington, where they were residing. Gladys then moved back to Salt Lake City, Utah and resided there until 2006, at which time she moved to St. George, Utah to enjoy the warm winters and to spend time with her best friend and sister, Maxine.

Gladys and Maxine enjoyed many laughs and good times, tending to each other’s dogs, going to movies and finding the best places to eat.

Gladys loved to knit and do cross stitch. She shared many of her sweaters and samplers with family and friends. She enjoyed reading and sharing thoughts on the newest seller.

She was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and enjoyed learning of the gospel.

Gladys was most proud of her children, grandchildren; (Justin Steven Sparks, Scott Nathan Sparks (Molly), Melissa Dawn St. John (Scott), Trevor Hayes, Austin Gold and Dallas Gold) and great-grandchildren; (Statton Scott Sparks, Allison Molly Sparks, Roxlyn Ivy Sparks and Trevon Markus Sparks) and loved them with all her heart.

Gladys passed away peacefully at Bear Lake Memorial Hospital on May 12, 2016, where she was tenderly cared for by the nurses and Dr. Clay Campbell. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband (Terry), her son (Gregory) and her brothers-in-law (Jess Chapman and Dale Austin).

She was a beautiful spirit and will truly be missed by all those who loved her.

I am shocked and sorry to hear about Gladys' death - I have many good memories of her and our high school days.  She always had a beautiful smile and her laugh was contagious!  My sympathy and love to her family.  Eva Kunz Johnson Berry
