MONTPELIER, IDAHO- Garth Lamont Bischoff, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend passed away peacefully Friday, February 6, 2004, from pancreatic cancer. He was surrounded by his family at his daughter's home in Irvine, California. Born May 26, 1933 in Wardboro, Bear Lake County, Idaho to Roscoe Alfred and Ellen Nate Bischoff, Garth was always active in sports and student government. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Upon graduation from Utah State University, he entered Naval Officer's Candidate School at Newport, Rhode Island, retiring from the military as a Captain in the Naval Reserve. An entrepreneur at heart, Garth started a number of businesses. He developed the first commercial two-rack chemical dishwashing machine. His company, Chemical Methods Associates, went public on the London Stock Exchange and was later bought out by S.C. Johnson Company.
An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Garth had served in many leadership positions, especially those having to do with the youth. Being an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman, he introduced many young men to the joys of this experience.
Garth is survived by his wife, Sheril Foster Knight, whom he met at Utah State and married in the Salt Lake Temple in August, 1955. They had five children. His surviving children and their spouses are: Kyle (Susan) Bischoff, Anya (Vern) Anthony, Vard (Jennifer) Bischoff, Isa (Matt) Jones and 22 grandchildren. He also has a sister Renee Bateman, and two brothers; Nate Bischoff and Craig Bischoff. He was preceded in death by his son Newell Bischoff, daughter-in-law Cheryl Bischoff-Newell, and his parents. The family deeply appreciates the love and support demonstrated by many friends and extended family. Additionally, they are grateful for their relationship with Neil Newell who became part of the family after the death of their son, Newell. Garth's enthusiasm for life and adventure was contagious. Although he had traveled to many fascinating places around in the world, his favorite place to be was Dingle, Idaho where he had grown up and where he and his wife recently retired. A viewing was held at Saddleback Mortuary in Tustin, California Monday, February 9, 2004. Funeral arrangements in Idaho have been made with Matthews Mortuary. Services will be held at the Dingle, Idaho LDS Chapel (near Montpelier) Saturday, February 14, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Wardboro, Idaho Cemetery.
